My Ghyll Scrambling Adventure
Last week in Keswick, Sophie, Daddy and I went on an adventure together to do something called Ghyll Scrambling. Ghyll Scrambling (pronounced gill) is where you take a hike with a wetsuit and helmet up to a river in the mounatains. You then slide and walk down through the river to the bottom. You do a different jump or slide on each section. Some of these include sliding head first or backwards on your front or back, jumping with your arms and legs crossed like a pencil, and belly flopping. You also have to walk carefully across the rocks placing your feet and hands very carefully so you don’t fall. It can be dangerous but It is a lot of fun.
One thing I enjoyed was hiking on the rocks and holding onto the trees and side so I didn’t fall. Sometimes it got narrow and slippery so it was easy to lose your balance. Luckily we had wet suits on to keep us warm and cushion our falls. I thought this part was super fun and scary at the same time.
Another thing I enjoyed was jumping from up high into the deep and cold pools below. Some of the pools were over my head and I had to swim towards a rope for safety. I was unsure of jumping at first but then I got my feet in the right position and went for it.
A third thing I enjoyed was bellyflopping into the narrow pools. These pools were also very shallow but they didin’t feel that way when I flopped down. I thought it was amazing that no matter how big or small you are everyone made the same size splash.
To sum up Ghyll Scrambling, I thought it was super fun. A more extreme version is called Canyoning and I would be happy if I got to do it or something similar in the future. Maybe when we get to New Zealand we will go on another adventure.
